"Everything you are going through, somebody has already gotten through it" - Elaine Richardson |
Sunday the 22nd I attended the Black Student Union's annual Soul Food dinner and I could not have been more happy with the decision to spend my Sunday evening there. That Saturday and Sunday morning I had been helping out in the kitchen with the cooking and preparation of the food and also the decoration for the event itself seeing as how I am a member of the Black Student Union here on the Stevens Point, Wisconsin campus. Although we had to wake up at 8 in the morning to begin prepping it was definitely worth it in the end, the turn out was a major success. The food was delicious and the entertainment was excellent and pure to the roots. We had a few step shows from two different sororities and also a guest speaker/performance from the beautiful Elaine Richardson herself. The author of "PHD to PH.D" and she spoke vividly and in great detail about how education saved her life and all the things she had done to end up on the wrong path but also how she made connections with the right people and got her life back on track and hasn't fell off since! Her story was truly moving and genuine you could tell she felt totally comfortable talking about all the struggles and obstacles she endured and over came in her time, and there was not a body in the audience that didn't laugh to her jokes, vibe with her singing, and feel for her struggle. She is truly a beautiful person inside and out and she said something that truly stuck with me and that is that "everything you are going through, somebody has already gotten through it." If that's not the motivation a college student needs to here from time to time, I don't know what is.
